The Baltimore Orioles have had very little success this decade – with the start of a new decade maybe the Orioles fortunes will change. The last time the Orioles had success was in 1997 when they reached the American League Championship. When a team plays in the toughest division in baseball – American League East – the team must have better then average players. That is what Baltimore has been for 11 years – just average with no potential upside.
The Orioles only had 25 road wins on the season which was last in the American League – only one team had fewer road wins in the National League – Pittsburgh Pirates with 22.
Ortiz did finish with 28 home runs and 99 RBI – which most players would take – the season wasn’t at all Ortiz like. Jason Bay had a very solid, productive season with 36 home runs and 119 RBI which lead the team. Dustin Pedroia is the little engine that could and put up another stellar season following his MVP year of 2008.
No Orioles starting player batted over .300 – the highest was Nick Markakis at .293. Markakis also lead the team in RBI with 101. Luke Scott lead the team with only 25 home runs. The last winning season the Orioles had was way back in 1997 finishing with a record of 98-64 losing to the Cleveland Indians in the American League Championship. Even the historically horrid Tamp Bay Rays have had a winning season more recently then the Orioles.
We have learned in years past spending the most money doesn’t win championships – take the New York Yankees this decade. 2010 should be a better year for the Orioles – but their past indicated if it is it won’t be much better. If The Tamp bay Rays can make a world Series run there is no reason the Baltimore Orioles can’t some season in the future
