Before your team can begin to work on basketball plays, you must help them to master the concept of basketball drills, and while this might sound (and be) incredibly boring, it is also an incredibly important part of coaching basketball. Drills will not only serve as a great introduction to basketball plays, they will also serve to build discipline and get your players a bit more comfortable with moving around the court with the ball.
Think of it as basic training, if you will. One of the first basketball drills you will want to run is the line sprint, and this exercise serves a very specific purpose. To begin, everyone will need to stand on the base line, and from there, they will need to sprint to the base line and then sprint to the free throw line. In addition to that they can sprint to the half court line, and continue doing so for a period of time. Your players should not run from one end of the court to the other directly as the purpose of this exercise is to give them the ability to perform running bursts. The ability to move quickly over a small area will not only come in handy, they may serve to save the game from an unthinkable fate.
Control over the ball while running and dribbling is also essential to the game, and you must do drill to help the players with that. After all, no basketball plays is complete if your players cannot dribble. Full court dribbles will instill within the players the instinct they need to handle and command the ball properly. Have the players dribble all the way up the court and back down, and repeat over and over daily. Alternate between hands, first using the right, then the left, then a combination and so on, however you like. As time goes on they will get better at this and it will begin to show in their game. Repeat, repeat, repeat, and you will eventually see the progress in your team.
Drills are essential to the success of the team, and putting in the work and hours needed will transfer directly into increasing your team’s prowess on the court. You will win some and lose some, and you must be prepared for some defeats, but don’t settle for defeat. Keep drilling and practicing and you will get better. Overconfidence on the part of your team should be avoided, and you should expect some losses, but you should also work for more wins. Now is the time for your coaching to take off and make a difference in the lives of your team players, so prepare for anything and everything the game might throw at you. Train and practice often, and you can certainly hope that the best will come to you.
