Let’s face it that like confidence, self-control in Coaching high school soccer is an option that players can choose. Self-control strategies in soccer coaching depend upon the relationship between emotions and thoughts. We all know that our state of mind influences our emotions, which in turn strengthens our performance.
With a view to help the players in learning the skill and discipline of self-control, there is a 12 step strategy which I shall discuss with you. But make sure that your player’s only take these steps when they are sure of its value to them.
The players should be ready to accept full responsibility for their acts as well. The strategy has been given below in 12 steps for your reference.
1. Awareness: In coaching youth soccer, lend a helping hand to players in identifying their weak points. Have them analyze where, when, and how they lost control on field during the past.
2. Understanding: Make the players realize why their thinking changed and how it caused them to lose their emotional balance.
3. Differences: Let the players recall situations in the past when they did and did not lost control. Have them decide the differences in their attitudes, behaviors, and emotions.
4. Problem: When it comes to coaching high school soccer, try to point out the real problem. For example: The player may be feeling guilty that he let the entire team down due to his actions.
5. Belief: The players should be taught to raise their expectations for themselves with self-control as one of the traits. Encourage them to change.
6. Reinforcement: Behavior change is accelerated by reinforcement. So, as a coach, you must reward improved behavior of players on their way to permanent change.
7. Goals: Start with multiple smaller goals, so that you can take your players along the path to changes. Guide the players in understanding the correlation between way of thinking, thought process, and actions.
8. Techniques: Put together different behavioral action items to uphold the confidence level. For example: When a particular situation comes up, this is the path that the players must go by.
9. Plan: In football coaching, teach a planned and systematic way of chasing the goals to players.
10. Progress: Tell them to learn the skill of patience. Help the players realize the value of ups and downs in the path to improvement.
11. Setbacks: Train the players to accept that setbacks are bound to happen from time to time. Thus, utilize these to learn new things for improvement.
12. Remembrance: Last but an important point is to let the players identify the good reason behind the change. They must understand the importance of what they are doing. How important the change is for their future?
We all now that a soccer player who can act speedily with comfort is in a perfect performance state. It means possessing energy without tension.
This is of utmost importance. Coaching high school soccer must include relaxation techniques so that the players can learn to be in-charge of their emotions to save energy and kill any fears.
