That’s right, my custom etnies totally helped me to be a better skater. Hard to believe when you read this at first, but consider my reasoning.
Can you recall when you were younger the rush you would have when you bought a new pair of shoes? Especially if those shoes were pumps, had lights, air bubbles or some other cool thing that made you feel like a superhero. I can remember that I did and have a lot of friends that have talked about feeling like they could suddenly fly, were invincible or had otherwise been given some divine form of superhuman power. I would be happy for days showing off to random old ladies at the store and bragging about my kicks.
Today, now that almost every imaginable and unimaginable form of shoe has been invented, used and ran out of style, getting a new pair of kicks just isn’t as cool as it used to be, especially when you know that pretty much 100 million other cats have the exact same shoes. This is where custom etnies can make all the difference.
I’ve used a lot of skate shoes and can still recall when almost all were basically the same, so chillin with my boys would mean that we were sporting the same kicks. I decided to go all out and give the “Design Your Own” site a chance and made my very first custom skate shoes. They were black and had my nickname “Crazy” embroidered in white on the sides and let me tell you, they were much better than those “make your own custom skate shoes by spray painting some old crappy canvas shoes that you find laying in the back of the garage” types. So back to how I am a stronger skater because of my custom etnies. To make it clear, no, the custom etnies do not give physical powers that allow you to ollie higher, complete megaflips or travel through time (sorry to disappoint!), but what they did give me was transformation on a psychological level. Skateboarding is totally about individuality and it may seem weird, but when you feel your best, that you are yourself and unique, you let your own style to flow through your skating. For me, this meant skating faster, smoother and most importantly, happily, with the knowledge that my new kicks were the only ones of their kind in the neighborhood.
