Until about two years ago, every holiday I had was spent lying on a beach in some country or another. I always told everyone that I had had a fantastic holiday but if I’m honest they weren’t that great. It just felt like a waste of time to be visiting a country and spending a lot of time just lying around or getting drunk. Instead I would have preferred to see some things of interest. And when it comes to things that interest me, it is not a museum or a historical site, but anything to do with football. So I decided that I would like to see some of the football stadiums around the world and the close proximity of France meant that this was the first choice.
Football is my passion, but this summer trip mostly involved visiting the stadiums when there were no matches being played at the time although I did get to see a couple of games. Some of my best memories have occurred inside football stadiums so I love these structures. In much the same way that arty folk get a buzz from visiting places like the Tate gallery, I get the same feeling from a football stadium. I actually enjoy just standing in an empty stadium when no football is being played because I can really feel the passion that has been experienced there.
That is why I decided to go and see the 20 football stadiums in France from Ligue 1. I did this during my two week holiday and to say it was hard is an understatement. I got to see a lot more than you would get on any beach though; in fact it was the best holiday I’ve ever had by far. Next year I want to go back and try for the Ligue 2 stadiums and maybe the year after that I’ll move onto Germany. And if I’m lucky I might get to see some of the major football stadiums all over the world.
Today, more and more families are taking the car and driving to their holiday destination abroad. Many people head to the South Coast to grab theferry to france. Doing this takes away the worry of thinking aboutdisneyland paris tickets. At the end of the day there isn’t a better way of getting in some city breaks europe?
