One focus of many collectors is the rising star. In football, this sort of collecting is rather limited. With only some hundred players being introduced to the NFL yearly, the rising stars are easier to name and widely sought after. However before, with baseball it’s a different story. Literally thousands of players are floating about the minors or recently drafted with high hopes. So, with that in mind. We’re going to take a brief look at [the top] twenty five prospects out there before Spring Training ever gets ongoing. Over the next 12 weeks, we’ll throw some names out there for you to keep a breast of. We’ve found over the last few years that the best method to approach this style of collecting is by studying the major prospects from last year and weeding out those that didn’t perform. It’s a much sounder science than considering the potential stars of next year. That having been said, [here are] some names that we think you out to know as you look for the next big thing… 1. Cameron Maybin – [an injury] slowed his progress in 2009, but he is expected to be fully healthy in 2010 and he’s already earned the starting spot in CF. 2. Alcides Escoba – This guy was on our watch list long prior to the offseason came. Before, he has SKYROCKETTED in interest because the Brew Crew got rid of their daily short stop. Essentially handing the job to Escoba. He hit over .300 in just 30+ games during a late season call up. 3. Neftali Feliz – Big things are in store for this kid. He’s being groomed by a guy that knows a little bit about pitching (Nolan Ryan) and in the 20 games he appeared in during 2009 he put up SCAREY numbers. How scarey? 0.68 WHIP, 1.74 ERA, 39 K’s in 31 innings, opponent batting average of just .124. He’s likely to transition to the starter roll in the spring.
