There are many great coaches in the world of basketball, and there are a number of important things to do to become one. Good basketball coaching is an art, that only a few coaches have mastered. If you are aiming to become the latter, here are some things that every great coach must remember:
1- If you think that by forcing the rules on the players, thinking that you run the game, direct the plays, and pretty much make the players life wretched, then you definitely have the wrong perspective. The players should know that they should be able to count on you as their coach and mentor to be there for them when they are going through a rough period. You must encourage and support them. There are times when their playing level is less than perfect, and you must be there to help them do better, especially to those to whom it happens more frequently. Some basketball drills are done so as to help ingrain the needed skills into the players mind, and once the coach has done his part, when the real game happens, he should not interfere and let the players do the best they can with what they were taught. Only if the team really needs help should the coach step in.
2) Never be unprepared or surprised by what the other team could throw your way. Always be ready for any and every situation. If the other team is just as good as your team, and their plays are just as good as your teams, then any play in the playbook will not necessarily help you to beat them. Before basketball season the coach should prepare a playbook so that when the players come in to train and learn the basketball plays, they will be ready to prepare for the upcoming season. If the players are well prepared before the season starts, they will be ready for any onslaught the other team might have.
3- A coach should put emphasis on perfection of the game, but not get too tense about it and allow for mistakes. 100% perfection in every game is literally impossible for a human, no matter how talented they are. Many of the best players have off games and seasons, so it is completely natural if it should happen to your team. A coach should push for perfection in everything that a player does during the practices and drills, and the coach should encourage the players to play the best they can when it comes to game time, no matter if mistakes are made.
4- You need to learn to work around the players’ different strengths and weaknesses. Making the players’ strengths and weaknesses balance out between each other is what the great coaches do, and by doing that it makes them just strengths. The poor coaches take the weaknesses of a player and try to train it out of them, but the great coaches exploit them so that the team is more well-rounded.
