Will Mourinho last the 2011-2012 season?

FC Barcelona made a spectacular season last year with the Spanish League, Champions League, Spanish Supercup and European Supercup to their name. The sole titles they left on the table was the Copa del Rey, won by Real Madrid but that was tiny consolation for high expectations under Jose Mourinho, the debatable Portuguese coach.

The contrast between Mourinho and Barcelona’s own coach, Pep Guardiola, could barely be larger. While Guardiola is often subdued and not too much used to explain himself or his team, Mourinho is quite the reverse, famous for aggressively playing mind games ahead of vital matches and blaming everybody from opposition players to linesmen and referees.

While the competition between the two clubs is mythical, there are a few things vicious about how the games have played out since Jose Mourinho; Real Madrid plays hard and their players have been psyched up before matches and assertive as a consequence.

This is the genuine basis of the confrontations between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona; Jose Mourinho is not exactly in charge of himself and his players are constantly on the edge of losing control. In recent matches at least 2 clasicos have finished in fights, including the Spanish Supercup when Mourinho himself may be seen to press his finger into the center of Guardiola’s helper, Tito Vilanova.

Quite how long Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Perez, will tolerate Mourinho’s histrionics is not known; the club has a history of dispatching even successful coaches. If Mourinho can concentrate on his task in hand, which is to win the Spanish League title, if not Champions League, then his antics and oddities might be endured.

Nonetheless if he continues to focus his energies on FC Barcelona while losing points towards other groups and continuing to disparage Madrid’s reputation on the world stage then Perez could look to replace him mid-season; it would not be the first time. But Mourinho is doing his own reputation no good, and he may find it complicated to find a job in his preferred league in England.
